Featured Project: Seward Park New Build
When I first met this family, they were in the very beginning stages of the new build process. They had decided to tear down their existing home and replace it with a pre-fabricated farmhouse they purchased from a company in another state. What does that mean? Well basically, the home was shipped to them via truck in large segments. So rather than building from scratch they already had the framework for the house and they brought me in to design the inside.
They had already found a contractor to work on the interior details when they hired us, but as luck would have it, they started their permitting process in March of 2020 right when the pandemic hit. Due to this, their permits were set back significantly, and their original contractor unfortunately backed out of the job. I think it ended up being a blessing in discuss because I was able to refer them to our preferred construction team, Remodel Pros. Remodel Pros did the gut renovation on my personal home, plus our neighbors tear down and they were top notch in every way. On time, professional, detail oriented and most importantly, honest. It’s extremely hard to find a construction team that checks all these boxes so I was excited to work with them to help bring this families vision to life.
One of the first things I started doing was space planning. Meaning, I talked to the family about how they needed the rooms in the home to function. I noticed there was no fireplace in the living room (they opted out of wanting a fireplace as it wasn’t something of necessity to them) so I needed to create a focal wall to take away from the fact that there wouldn’t be a fireplace. Since they have two small kids, I suggested a large bank of built ins that spanned across the entire living room wall. This would provide not only storage for all of the kids toys, etc, but also a beautiful design moment. And because they were doing a farmhouse, we had to include shiplap.
Another update was to the storage closet that was originally designed to be an enclosed closet right as you walk in from front door. Because we didn’t have a huge foot print to work with, I wanted to maximize the space and make it feel as open as possible. So we ditched the storage closet and designed an entryway wall unit instead with functional cabinets above, shoe drawers below, and hooks in between to hang jackets and backpacks. One of the perks of working with us and Remodel Pros is the access to the cabinet company that only does custom designs, allowing us to create this storage area that was designed specifically for this family.
For this home, I was really inspired by the colors and textures of the Pacific Northwest and I wanted to bring in some of that inspiration in the form of color. So we went with this beautiful green paint for the kitchen cabinets and entryway wall unit. For the floating shelves and bench tops, I chose a dark stained wood for contrast and depth. In addition to the kitchen, we used this stained wood throughout the home in their laundry room/pantry, primary bathroom, and living room.
In the kitchen, I wanted the back wall to be that “wow factor!” right as you walk in so I designed floating shelves for extra storage and tile to the ceiling. The clients thought of the idea to do a custom spice rack on the wall which you see below to the right of the floating shelves. Again, another benefit of going custom!
Believe it or not, this dry bar you see below was actually an afterthought and it turned out to be one of my favorite moments of the entire home. This was initially meant to be a built in desk per the architects plan, but during one of walk-throughs with the builders, I had an idea to turn it into a dry bar for entertaining purposes. Of course, we had to bring in more shiplap here and just love how well it rounded out the space.
Look how much beautiful natural light they have in their kitchen! You can just see the light radiating in through this photo. This kitchen still takes my breath away every time I look at the photos. What an honor it was to help this family bring their dream home to life! The end result was exactly what they were hoping for and more and we are so proud to have been a part of it.
a note from our clients
“We were introduced to Jenna through a mutual friend a couple years ago. At our first meeting, I knew this was the person that could help bring balance and style to the home we were about to build. From the beginning, our house project was met with delay after delay due to the new pandemic and the unknowns that came along with that. Jenna’s patience and determination to see the project through never wavered. She is very task focused, flexible and enthusiastic about sharing new and fun ideas. She helped bring our vision to life and made our house feel so warm and welcoming. We are truly happy with the professionalism, communication and creations from the team at Styled Out West.”
