Welcome to Everyday Coastal Living
Just as the sound of the waves crashing against the beach puts you at ease, I want your home to do the same.
Everyday coastal living is a phrase I coined after really thinking about my design style. The types of colors, textures and products I lean towards and how I want my home (and my clients homes) to feel. And the best part? You don’t need to live near the water to achieve this style.
Born and raised on the West Coast, the ocean soothes my soul. Maybe it was because I was lucky enough to have spent a lot of time on the beaches of Santa Cruz, San Diego and Hawaii growing up (I had family all over) so I guess you can say I sort of “grew up” at the beach. But even when we moved to Seattle, I was so drawn to the water here and how it surrounds us wherever we go.
Everyday coastal living is a stylish, inviting and relaxed vibe that sets the whole tone for your home. It’s bright, airy and down to earth, making people want to walk right in and cozy up on the couch. Designing around the natural beauty of the beach celebrates the ocean, sand, sunshine and the environment that surrounds us. I love to bring the outside in. So whether you live in a city unit, sprawling country property or casita by the beach, you can still achieve everyday costal living in your own home by incorporating a few simple elements.
Design elements
Clean lines, bright and open spaces, and plenty of windows to let in the natural light. Neutral colors and muted palettes that reflect the colors of the sand, ocean and sunset. Using accessories and elements that look as if they have been collected from your travels bring nature inside such as: driftwood, rock, glass and foliage. Chunky knits, linens and woven textures help tie everything together.
don’t be afraid of too much white
It creates a simple, inviting and relaxing vibe that will instantly remind you of vacation. Rugs, decorative pillows and throws are great ways to incorporate color in a neutral space. And don’t forget to let the light in - natural light is very important. In fact, it’s probably the single most important design element in achieving this vibe. Besides, who doesn’t want to let the sunshine in? If you’re worried about it being too bright, invest in woven shades that filter light but still maintain privacy when needed.
In the kitchen, there are so many options. You can opt for a more fun backsplash that will bring in color or go for a more neutral option like the picture here. Either way, a bright and airy kitchen gives you the illusion of a more organized and clean space and you can always add in visual interest with plants, fruit and textured furniture.
create an oasis
For your bedroom, you want it to feel comforting and calm - an oasis at home. I want my bedroom to remind me of vacation, so I invest in better linens, black out shades, and lots of cozy throws and pillows. Keep your furniture smaller scale, yet functional - think minimalist. Too much oversized furniture or things can cause overwhelm, and that’s the last thing you want in your bedroom. Use natural elements in your lighting, such as a woven shade or chandelier and consider a wood side table or headboard. And lastly, keep the media out. I know hotels have TV’s, but your bedroom shouldn’t. It’s a place for sleeping, resting and recharging the batteries.
